Background of the Study

Energy efficiency is a critical aspect of sustainable construction practices, especially in the context of Nigeria, where energy consumption is high and the electricity grid is unreliable. The use of energy-efficient materials, such as insulated windows, energy-efficient lighting, and reflective roofing, can significantly reduce energy demand, leading to lower operational costs and environmental benefits. However, the adoption of these materials in Nigeria’s construction industry remains limited, often due to higher upfront costs, lack of awareness, and limited availability of locally sourced materials.

Research by Olanrewaju et al. (2024) highlights that the adoption of energy-efficient materials can reduce a building's carbon footprint, improve comfort for occupants, and lead to long-term savings. Despite these benefits, the Nigerian construction industry has been slow to embrace energy efficiency due to factors such as inadequate policy incentives and a lack of technical knowledge. This study evaluates the adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigeria’s construction industry, exploring barriers, benefits, and strategies to accelerate adoption.

Statement of the Problem

The Nigerian construction industry is characterized by high energy consumption, both during the construction phase and throughout the building’s operational life. While energy-efficient materials offer significant potential for reducing energy demand and improving environmental performance, the adoption of these materials is low. Factors such as cost, limited awareness, and lack of supporting policies hinder their widespread use.

This study seeks to evaluate the extent of adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigeria’s construction industry and identify strategies to overcome barriers to their adoption.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the extent of adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigeria’s construction industry.

  2. To identify the factors influencing the adoption of energy-efficient materials in the industry.

  3. To propose strategies for increasing the adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigerian construction projects.

Research Questions

  1. To what extent are energy-efficient materials adopted in Nigeria’s construction industry?

  2. What factors influence the adoption of energy-efficient materials in the construction sector?

  3. What strategies can encourage the greater use of energy-efficient materials in Nigerian construction projects?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Energy-efficient materials significantly reduce energy consumption in buildings in Nigeria.

  2. Factors such as cost, availability, and policy incentives influence the adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigeria’s construction industry.

  3. Increased awareness and government incentives can accelerate the adoption of energy-efficient materials in Nigeria.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on energy-efficient materials in Nigeria’s construction industry, evaluating adoption levels, barriers, and strategies for wider usage. Limitations include data access and variability in the adoption of energy-efficient materials across different regions and construction sectors.

Definitions of Terms

  • Energy-Efficient Materials: Materials that reduce energy consumption in buildings, typically by improving insulation or reducing heating and cooling needs.

  • Sustainable Construction: Building practices that minimize environmental impact, conserve resources, and enhance long-term environmental performance.

  • Carbon Footprint: The total amount of greenhouse gases emitted by a building or construction activity.
